ICONS OF THE BURNING MAN TEMPLE CULTURE

The Temple Builder

David Best is a Burning Man, as the SF MOMA says. The Californian artist from Petaluma certainly is a very inspirational figure, and one of the most respected icons in the burners world.

David Best is The Temple Builder, as celebrated by a documentary movie with the same title. With the Temple of the Mind he built in Black Rock City in 2010 he started the Temple tradition at Burning Man, bringing to the playa a sacred space where participants can mourn, let go, celebrate and connect at a deeper, spiritual level.

With The 2016 Temple, David Best brought to Burning Man his eight Temple design in 16 years, and he has built other temples in different parts of the world, all burned in the true burner spirit.

Find in the resources below some articles and interviews to David Best that highlight his charisma and vision, and offer more insight on his work, creative process and philosophic take on the deep meaning of the Temple culture at Burning Man.

The Temple Guardians

The Temple Guardians are the living soul of the Temples. Humble, discreet and almost invisible (if not for the traditional bandana), the Guardians hold the space at the Temple, and offer assistance and support to participant in grief and pain.

The Guardians’ commitment in taking care of the Temple and its participants has made the volunteer group very popular at Burning Man, and turned the volunteer group into another playa icon.

A recent short film has celebrated the Temple Gurdians contribution to the playa experience. The film has been produced by the same director who also dedicated a short film to the Temple of Transition. Watch them both on Vimeo: Dear Guardians, Dear Temple of Transition. While you are on Vimeo, check out also this short film dedicated to The Temple.

We love the Temple Guardians, and we invite everybody to support the volunteer group, on and off the playa.
