Cannabis Terpenes: The Olfactory Experience

Feb 1, 2019

With the main installation piece already completed, it’s time to work with the cannabis terpenes. The guys at Cali Terpenes, technical partner of 50 Shades of Green, sent the first terpenes last week for the first olfactory tests, and the other terpenes will arrive in a few days.

But let’s see how I intend to use the terpenes as part of the art installation and experience. First of all, here is a list of the 15 terpenes of popular marihuana strains that will be integrated in the 50 Shades of Green project, straight our of the amazing Cali Terpenes collection:

  • Amnesia
  • Orange turbo
  • Jamaican Dream
  • Girl Scout Cookies
  • Critical
  • Sour Diesel
  • OG Kush
  • Grapefruit OG
  • Blackberry Kush
  • Lavender
  • AK 47
  • Pink Plant
  • Cheese
  • Tangie
  • Black Dream

Cannabis terpenes, as all other terpenes, are highly volatiles, and their smell would fade in less than half hour, if used in a pure form. For this reason, following the advice of Cali Terpenes, I’ll be using the terpenes mixed with neutral essential oils for aromatherapy, so they will hold longer on fabric – but not that long, just a few hours. This is why I have already planned to spray the cannabis terpenes on the shades 3 times a day: in the morning right after the opening of Canapa Mundi, around lunchtime, and at mid-afternoon. It will be kind of a performance act.

Also, the scent produced by terpenes is pretty intense and pervasive – for this reason, and always with the precious advice from out technical partner friends from Barcelona, it would have been an olfactory mess if I placed too many terpenes in a small space. To bypass the problem of oversaturation of terpenes, the olfactory strategy we sorted out is to include one terpene every 8 shades or so, and to use no more than 5 cannabis terpenes at the time in the 50 Shades of Green tunnel. And, since I have 15 terpenes available for the installation, I will use 3 different daily “menus” of marihuana scents, one for each day of the exhibition at the trade show.

I’m still figuring out the right terpenes sequence, and the daily menus, but I will share the results from the tests soon on this blog. Stay tuned for more info on the cannabis terpene experience, and thanks again to Cali Terpenes for the support!
