Early Works, Post-it Art, Personal + Collective Exhibitions, Land Art and Site-Specific Installations, Burning Man Art. All my artwork is here. Almost all of it. Check it out.

This is a selection of the exhibitions and art installation work I have managed to document and bring online. Some older, undocumented stuff will be lost in memory, but that’s the way it is…

Please note that, up to 2003, I mainly operated as Massimo Burgio, while in the last 20 years or such I have made art exhibitions and installations as either Massimo Burgio or Burningmax. Or both.

For more information, exhibition bookings, or to get me involved in a collective project, do not hesitate to contact me.

Early Works (1989-1996)

Welcome to a selection of my early works, for the majority paintings and material artwork, inspired by several sources including action painting, abstract expressionism, pop art, and conceptual art.
While I got to exhibit some on the works in personal and collective exhibitions (Palermo, Roma, Oviedo), most of the works in this gallery never really left my studio, if not for following my movings to new spaces over time.
I hope you'll like my works. Click on any image to start a gallery view.

Post-it Art (since 1994)

This is a selection of the works I've created using one of my favourite medium: post-it notes. The works include framed works, sculptures and installations, and post-its have been processed in many ways, from plain to painted, printed and written on, submersed in wax and resins, burned, framed in perspex and wood, and so on...
We all normally use post-it notes to take notes, remember things and pinpoint ideas. For this reason I see post-it notes as "extended modules of memory" and, when many of them go together, they represent a cluster of ideas and memories, and sometimes are meant to represent individual or collective consciousness.
Besides of the conceptual reason for the use of post-it notes, I really love to work with them for their flexibility and for the way they feel at touch, specially when they curl. For medium-sized and large scale works and installation, the process of handling hundreds/thousands of post-it notes, that need to be picked up one by one, constitutes a repetitive, hypnotic process that feels like a mantra to me.
I hope you'll like my works. Click on any image to start a gallery view.

Exhibitions and Art Installations

Welcome to the selection of the exhibitions and art installation work I have managed to document and bring online.
While for some of the latest project I provide links to dedicated websites and photo galleries (normally on Flickr or Facebook), for exhibitions with early works or post-it art please refer to the galleries included under the dedicated early works and post-it art sections for a more complete portfolio of works. This section does not include the works filed under land art installations and Burning Man / collective projects neither, for which I invite you to explore the dedicated sections.

Land Art Installations

Here is all my documented work in the field of land art installations and environmental art. Most of these projects are site-specific interventions, a couple of works are featured as permanent land art installations, and some others are collaborative efforts created as temporary artwork for Burning Man events like the main festival in Black Rock City (Nevada, USA) and smaller regional European burners gatherings such as Nowhere, Barcelona Burning Bash Weekend (Spain) and Italian Burning Boots (Italy).
While a couple of projects are well documented, with dedicated websites and full media galleries, others come with very basic project info. There are also a few projects missing from the list, but I have no records of such works, so let's consider them as "ephemeral" in the Fluxux/Burning Man fashion, let's forget about them, and let's move on.
For more information, bookings, or if you want to get me involved in a collaborative land art project, do not hesitate to contact me.

TREE OF LIFE

Nowhere Festival, Monegros Desert | 2019

COLLABORATIVE | BURNING MAN

I've loved being part of the project designed by my good burner friend Arlo Leibowitcz for Nowhere 2019 and co-created by a project crew of a dozen volunteers. I supported Arlo with the project since the design and pre-production steps, then took charge of the entire logistics in the Monegros, worked a lot with the cañas, and ended up proposing the final on-the-fly radical design change when already building on the playa. Full photogallery to be published soon. Stay tuned.

THE ZONE

Campicozzoli, Tuscany, Italy | 2018

BURNING MAN

THE ZONE is a site-specific land art installation created in the woods around Florence, Tuscany, in June 2018. The installation is composed of 15 rolls of a soft organic red cotton string. Each roll measures around 70 mts, and all rolls have been tied together to form one continuous red string, long more than 1 Km. Read more and see a photo album on Facebook.

APELLE

Bacoli/Pozzuoli, Naples, Italy | 2018

Land art installation for the XIV edition of the Land Art Campi Flegrei festival. Following the theme of the land art festival, the installation is a denounce for the degradation and abandonment of the close-by Temple of Apollo, and plays a conceptual twist around a popular Italian tongue twister. See the project website, complete with photo and video galleries at www.apellecampiflegrei.com.

HOMENAJE A LOS MONEGROS

Alcubierre, Los Monegros, Spain | 2017

Site-specific land art installation in the trenches of the Spanish Civil War in the Monegros, where George Orwell fought. The installation is a tribute to George Orwell in the 80th anniversary of the Spanish civil war, and it's part of the Orwell Monegros Project. See the project website, complete with photo/video gallery and production blog at www.orwellmonegros.com.

HOMENAJE A ARAGON

CDAN - Centro de Arte y Naturaleza, Huesca, Spain | 2017

Technically not land art, Homenaje a Aragon was a site-specific installation for the CDAN Museum of Huesca, Spain. I like to consider it land art, as the museum itself is dedicated to land art, and the intervention was part of the Orwell Monegros Project, and has been conceived as an extension of the land art installation in the Orwell trenches. See photo/video galleries at the project blog www.orwellmonegros.com.

TEMPLE OF REFLECTION

Sariñena + Monegros Desert, Spain | 2015

COLLECTIVE | BURNING MAN

A collective land art installation project aimed at creating a sacred space for the community of the Nowhere festival, a tradition at Burning Man gathering. The Temple has been built twice: at first as part of an artist residency in Sariñena, then it has been rebuilt for the Nowhere festival in the Monegros desert. More info at this blog post about the project, complete with photos of the production crew at work.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

Black Rock City, Nevada, USA | 2013

COLLECTIVE | BURNING MAN

A collective land art installation and official regional effigy (CORE) to represent France at Burning Man 2013. I contributed in several roles (organization, communication, fundraising, build, leave-no-trace), but the part I enjoyed most was being Fire Lead, in charge for burning the installation and for fire safety in Black Rock City. See the project blog with photos, videos and project team interviews.

TEMPLE OF LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

Alcover, Catalunya + Monegros Desert, Spain | 2013

BURNING MAN

A fun interactive land art installation created for the Barcelona Burning Bash Weekend, a burners gathering in the woods south of Barcelona. The installation has also been also brought, a couple of months later, at the Nowhere festival in the Monegros desert but, due to a failure in connecting to the power grid, the installation was not successful as at the Barcelona festival. See a photo gallery on Facebook.

TEMPLE OF TRANSITION

Black Rock City, Nevada, USA | 2011

COLLECTIVE | BURNING MAN

The largest collective art project I ever participated to, and one of the biggest art installations ever seen at Burning Man. A 180 volunteers crew spent months building the Temple, so my contribution for communication, fundraising and 2 weeks of construction work in the desert doesn't seem a lot. But building a Temple has deep implications: the Temple doesn't belong to me, but I surely do belong to the Temple. Google Temple of Transition for articles, pictures and video.

BAMBOO BIOCONSTRUCTION BILBAO

Bilbao Botanical Gardens, Spain | 2011

COLLECTIVE

A collaborative project where I learned a lot from master bioconstruction builders, the same people who build bamboo structures at the Boom Festival in Portugal. In two weeks of work, tahe team of 15 people went through all the steps: planning, bamboo processing, building pre-constructed modules, and finally installing the artwork in the Botanical Gardens of Bilbao, Spain. See the project photo gallery on Flickr.

TEMPLE FOR A LOST SOUL

Monegros Desert, Spain | 2009

BURNING MAN

First attempt to build a Temple at the Nowhere festival in the Monegros Desert, even though the Temple for a Lost Soul was basically no more than a shrine in the flank of a desert mountain. See the project photo gallery on Flickr.

MAGNETIC DREAM FIELD

Monegros Desert, Spain | 2008

BURNING MAN

My first (documented) land art installation in Europe, at the Nowhere festival in the Monegros desert. The installation was meant to mirror an imaginary constellation that would have synched with the silver rocks during the festival, catching all participants into a dream state field. People didn't really get it, and renamed the artwork as "alien detection and monitoring station" or more simply "alien rocks". See a project photo gallery on Flickr.

BEYOND FEAR

Black Rock City, Nevada, USA | 2003

BURNING MAN

My very first participation to Burning Man in 2003, and my very first (documented) land art installation. The 3 "fear trees" I planted with the scope of collecting people's fears (on post-it leaves) to be burn and released in the wind worked fine on the conceptual side, but the scale of the installation was far from being appropriate for the vast spaces of Black Rock City. See a project photo gallery on Flickr.

Burning Man Projects

Here are all projects I've developed for the Burning Man community at gatherings and events around the world, from the main festival in Black Rock City (Nevada, USA) to smaller regional European burners gatherings such as Nowhere, Barcelona Burning Bash Weekend (Spain), Brussels Decompression (Belgium) and Italian Burning Boots (Italy). Some of this works are personal projects, but the majority of them are collaborative projects, specially the ones on a big scale.
For more information, or if you are working on a Burning Man project you'd like to get me involved with, do not hesitate to contact me.

LET IT ALL GO

Brussels, Belgium | 2014

PERSONAL | BURNING MAN

A site-specific art installation for the Belgian Burning Man gathering Brussels Decompression. After installing the post-it notes in a way that formed the words "let it all go", I've invited the participants to the event to write down those things they really want/need to led go and, as for my first BM project "Beyond fears", I burned the artwork at the end of the event, in a ceremony that was meant to "let go" of everything written on the post.it notes. See a small photo album on Flickr.
