Burningmax Time Machine: 2009
Introducing my new Burningmax Time Machine project. Starting today I will publish every month a mix that goes back in time. Not so back anyway, I’ll keep it contained to this century. Let’s start with the first instalment in the Burningmax Time Machine series, a mix entirely dedicated to the tunes I loved to play in my DJ sets, and that have been released in 2009, the year that I actually started DJing. Playing at the Together Mansion, the burner-friendly open house in the heart of Trastevere in Rome, is always a lot of fun. Same concept of the Boiler Room – DJ play in the middle of the main living room, with everybody around dancing and having a great time. Space is limited so it gets packed pretty soon, which is also fun. This is the recording of my second participation to the Room Beats event, last October 2019, after my first ROOM BEATS set back in June this year, closing the 2018-2019 season of Room Beats. Nowhere 2019 Sets: Live at KosmoZoo
Here is the first of the DJ sets I played this year at Nowhere 2009. Not the first I played this year in the Monegros desert, but probably the one where I had more fun playing. Enjoy the very funky and uplifting 2hrs sunset session (8-10PM) I played at the new amazing Belgian barrio KosmoZoo. I kicked the DJ set off with a very funky deep house tune I really love, then jumped immediately into Chicago house, mostly exploring the production of UK-based house label Soul Revolution, that I have recently discovered on BandCamp. At around half set I moved to UK garage and bass music, I dropped some afro-jamaican-brazilian percussions, and I finally closed the set with a bit of progressive deep house tunes. The final part of the set has been epic, a desert classic. A night dust storm was approaching, while the sunset painted the sky in reds and blacks, and the first drops of rain started coming down. Meanwhile, the KosmoZoo crew was protecting speakers and electronics from rain and securing tarps from the wind, I was playing a remixed version of Nathan Fake’s “The Sky was Pink”, and everybody kept dancing until the end of the set. ROOM BEATS – Live at the Together Mansion in Rome
Welcome to the Together Mansion, an amazing co-creators space in Trastevere, the heart of Rome. And welcome to Room Beats, the “packed small living room” version of the classic Boiler Room – the DJ at the center of the room, surrounded by an happy dancing crowd. A couple of weeks ago I have been invited to play at the closing event of the season, also closing the line-up after the sets of RoyTson and Estien – check them out, they are good! My Room Beats set has been defined by participants’ mood. I was not sure about the best sound to bring to a living room party – I thought people wanted cool, groovy beats, while I was ready to hit hard and rave – so we let participants decide by choosing a pill (obvious choice was blue or red) and putting it in a jar. Problem was that the responses were pretty much balanced between groove and rave, so I adapted and ended up kicking off with some groove techno tunes, to slowly move on to more acid, ravey sounds. Everybody loved it, and I had a great time. Can’t wait to play the Room Beats again! F Trilogy 3/3 :: Fuck Off and Rave
I haven’t played much live this year, but I’ve been stacking up tons of massive tunes. Last month I figured out that I’ve been listening to plenty of great music that I’ve never shared with anybody else, and what’s worst is that I didn’t even tried to pass it on decks. So I said “Fuck it, let’s empty the summer crates on Traktor and see what happens”. What happened was that the selection alone took almost an entire month… and I ended up with three different mix, even if more than 90% of the tunes didn’t made the selection. Bummer. Anyway, there’s enough music to keep everybody happy: 4 hours of relaxing electronica, 2 hours of uplifting dance music, and further 90 minutes of massive beats – music for all tastes! Since the whole idea started with a “Fuck it” (without the hypocrisy of the asterisks), the decision about the name of this multiple studio DJ set was immediate: introducing Burningmax’s F Trilogy! F Trilogy 2/3 :: Shut the Fuck Up and Dance
I haven’t played much live this year, but I’ve been stacking up tons of massive tunes. Last month I figured out that I’ve been listening to plenty of great music that I’ve never shared with anybody else, and what’s worst is that I didn’t even tried to pass it on decks. So I said “Fuck it, let’s empty the summer crates on Traktor and see what happens”. What happened was that the selection alone took almost an entire month… and I ended up with three different mix, even if more than 90% of the tunes didn’t made the selection. Bummer. Anyway, there’s enough music to keep everybody happy: 4 hours of relaxing electronica, 2 hours of uplifting dance music, and further 90 minutes of massive beats – music for all tastes! Since the whole idea started with a “Fuck it” (without the hypocrisy of the asterisks), the decision about the name of this multiple studio DJ set was immediate: introducing Burningmax’s F Trilogy! Take it personally or not, I hope you enjoy it. Burningmax Remixes :: Scalextric / Evercrispy
OK, go ahead and tell me that I’m obsessed with Laurent Garnier. Yes I am, he’s really the Master of the dancefloor, no matter the “temporary” dancefloor trends. Also, it’s the spirit of Monsieur Garnier that inspire me, even more than the music itself (that too). Did I tell you that this year I will visit Garnier’s FestivalYEAH! in the South of France, and I have booked two Ableton masterclass sessions with Scan X? =) So guess what’s my new remix about… =) The original track that I have used as a base for this remix is Scalextric, a massive groove by techno killers Pig+Dan, this time partnering with Alberto Ruiz for the job. As soon as I have heard this tune, I have immediately pictured in my mind as a perfect groove base for Laurent Garnier’s 1993 classic Crispy Bacon. A few loop cuts on my Traktor S4 and the new Evercrispy was born! I hope you enjoy it. One note: this is the very first take of my Evercrispy remix. Of course I have tried other versions – one at the original Crispy Bacon’s 130 bpm, another one veeeeery slow at 120 bpm, and several versions at 125, 127 and 128 bpms, all different also in terms of loop jamming. But after the long Evercrispy session, I decided to stick with the very first recording, at 126 bpm. My three DJ sets at the Barcelona Burning Bash Weekend (also and even better known as BBB) are immediately available online by popular demand. Over the last months, while I have been recording all my DJ sets, I never had the time to actually timecode them, upload them to MixCloud, and create the relative blog posts. But this time here they are, merely one week after the event, and all three of them! So here we go, a deep techno set with some rave, old school moments, one morning dance set for a crowd who still wanted to keep grooving, and a sweet afternoon set in the sun by a pool – all in the same blog post, for faster sharing! One technical note: since we had some problens with acoustics at the main stage of BBB, the sets played there have very little bass – I guess you can fix that manually by pumping the bass up in your device. The poolside set has a more balanced sound, and very chilly dance tunes. Burningmix 24 :: United We Rave, Divided We Fall
It has been a while since my last studio mix, and I really wanted to record one today for many reasons: to celebrate the fall equinox, as a warm-up for the upcoming London Decompression 2014, and also because in the last month I bought some really awesome new tunes! The rave tracks in this mix are truly massive, I can’t wait to play them on a powerful sound system. One technical note: I really felt the urge to mix today, but I had no controller and not even an audio card – so no pre-fade listening, and very little control over the loops, mixing straight out of my laptop. Sure, I tagged all the tracks with cue points before starting mixing, but even though it’s been pretty hard, so there are a couple of minor fuckups in the mix: can you spot them? Also, I had an additional handicap: I played with one year only, as I’m suffering from severe otitis since yesterday! The result is awesome anyway, and I consider this to be one of my best mixes of this year – I hope you’ll enjoy it too! Other important note: I figured out that in the file on Mixcloud there are a couple of “glitches”, around 1h27m, and also towards the end of the mix – probably an upload probrem. My third time at Rumpus in the last year, and the infamous London party is growing bigger and better. At its third anniversary, Rumpus “ramped up” to a larger venue, leaving behind the historic venue in North London in favor of the much larger, 12-rooms multistage Coronet Theatre on the South bank of the Thames. It’s been a very good Rumpus, the way parties should be! For the first time at Rumpus I didn’t close the dj session, but I was at the end of the night anyway, with a DJ set scheduled between 3AM and 4Am. I had a great feedback from the session, with the room packed and everybody down to dance, sweet! This studio mix has been recorded while I was following the (shameful) results of the recent Italian political elections 2013. I was pretty angry for the useless vote that resulted in a non-governable country and in a political chaos and more hard times for Italy. Which made me think at my good friend, burner and raver Miss Dusty Purple, who recently added a new ink job to her tattooed body, the awesome statement “Hard Times Require Furious Dancing” – yes, the one I used for the cover art of this mixdeck. Thanks Marghe! Furious Dancing? That was exactly what I needed to forget the elections, so I plugged my headphones and started mixing. Burningmix 14 :: Welcome To My House
Welcome to my house. A dreamy, twisted, psychedelic, vintage, uplifting, joyful deep techno house. After all “that noise”, here are 3hrs+ of happy progressive house beats. Sure, I infiltrate everywhere techno, trance and even dubstep, but the overall mood is uplifting and playful, even when it goes into psychedelic sounds. And yes, I dropped a lot of vintage beats, including two or three original tracks from the end of the ’80s and early ’90s. It’s been a lot of fun to mix it all, I hope you’ll have fun dancing to it! I have been inspired to mix deep tech house sounds after following Laurent Garnier in his latest tour, and catching up with gigs and dancing myself to bliss 10 times in one year in Rome, Madrid, Liverpool, Munich, Barcelona and elsewhere, including at festivals like Sonar and the Monegros Desert Festival. I even traveled with friends to Paris for the special night at the Rex Club dedicated by Monsieur Garnier to his fans to celebrate his 25th career anniversary as a dj. It’s been a beautiful epic night, and an amazing party with Laurent Garnier who mixed nonstop for more than 8 hours. That’s my boy. Burningmax Live 17 :: London Decompression 2012 (Casualties On The Dancefloor)
It took me a month to finally be able to publish the recording on my closing DJ set at London Decompression 2012. The reason is that my laptop died just a couple of days after the set, and my poor baby has been in the hospital (Apple assistance) until yesterday! A month and 420 Euro later (hey! 420 again!) I finally got it back. And here we are! The title Casualties on the Dancefloor came up while working on the London Decom playlist. “Really? Am I really going for remixed hardcore punk? Jeeee… I’m gonna make some casualties, this is pretty violent…“, but I decided to go for it anyway! I guess this has been the darkest and most violent sound I played live since I dj – I mean, the hard techno or overnoisy track every now and then or the super acid sets are part of the classic trademark sound of Burningmax live, but this is the first time I do a 1 hour 30 minutes set that can make your ears bleed. And I liked it, and people on the dancefloor too. I underestimated the level of aural resistance of the Decom crowd – they actually loved it and neverfuckingstop danced until the end at 6AM, leaving no casualties on the dancefloor at all! Sweet! Burningmax Live 16 :: 420 Session at Manrusionica
Due to a number of things that happened last summer, including switching to a new laptop and moving to Barcelona, I thought I lost the recording of the live djset I played at the Manrusionica festival last June in Manresa (Barcelona). I’m very happy that I just found the recording of the live set in a back-up disk, so let me post it here before I lose it again! =) Manrusionica launched in 2011 as a collaborative 2.0 festival of electronic music and visual arts. This year at its second edition it replicated last year’s success by filling up with acts and live gigs the entire city of Manresa for 24 hrs, covering a large number of indoor and outdoor areas of the city with a full festival of electronic culture. Did I mention that Manrusionics is a no profit event and that access to all gigs, acts and performance areas is free for the public? Well done Manrusionica! This is the DJ set I played at MART (Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Rovereto e Trento) last night. The Italian contemporary art museum invited me to play a live set for “Hungry Like The Woolf“, a dance party inspired to Virginia Woolf and the Modernism, which I twisted into a “Angry Like The Woolf” live set. I kicked in with a stripper song, a remixed Ella Fitzgerald and some pimped up electroswing, but pretty soon I moved into the techno rave sounds I feel more comfortable with, and closed the live set by venturing into dubstep and psychedelic electronica, just to throw in a pinch of “dancefloor modernism“.
